I was planning to write tonight’s newsletter about the history of the haunted, broken mid-century glockenspiel at the National Zoo here in D.C. Then, I had a transcendental bath experience, and you know how I love to share those with y’all. Or maybe you don’t, in which case, welcome. I like to take long hot baths, talk to god—god being the closest word I have for “infinite consciousness”—then email ~140 people about it. Now you know!
I was having a god bath last night and contemplating the what it means to surrender, to experiences, to life, to your desires. I searched the word on Spotify, hoping to find a peaceful soundtrack. I ended up on a playlist for giving birth (appropriate for what feels like a period of dark, wintery gestation), and the first song that came up on shuffle was “I Release Control” by Alexa Sunshine Rose. The lyrics are simple, one line repeating over and over again:
I release control and surrender to the flow of love that will heal me
A minute or so in, I was singing along. I encourage you to do the same. If you can do so sitting in a hot bath on this cold, snowy evening, all the better.
Here’s the YouTube link, too, since I know not everyone has Spotify…Mom…:
This morning I read Rose’s artist description on Spotify. She plays in a tuning frequency of 432 Hz, which is known as the “God note” or the “miracle frequency,” the vibration of “om.” Here’s a Vice article about a composer who started an entire chamber orchestra dedicated to playing and recording the classical cannon in 432 Hz, which details the thinking about why this frequency is considered to be healing.
Until next week, when we might get back around to zoo glockenspiels,
Elizabeth
