I love visual art that incorporates words. I make visual art that incorporates words. And so, as you might expect, when I see visual art with words, I like to find out who made it. I paused a took a screen shot of a TikTok this week when I saw the following posters hanging on a girl’s bedroom wall:
Googling “giraffe squid ink pasta” led me to contemporary British pop artist David Shrigley. What a name! As a person with a whimsical last name, I can attest to the impact it has on one’s worldview. It lends a certain silliness that we see here in his art.
Here are a few more of my favorites:
Very good, very silly. I have no further comment. I am working on being less of a critic and summarizer and more of a general enjoyer. If you’d like to get to know Shrigley further, here’s an interview.
His advice for making good art is to be well-rested and sober and well-fed. He also says, “you’re on the right track if you’re excited about what you’re doing.” Good advice.
