Three films to celebrate mothers.
A guest curation by journalist (and dear friend) Kayla Randall.
I wanted to honor Mother’s Day with a mini-roundup of films that show multi-dimensional motherhood, and there’s no one more up to the curatorial task than my dear friend Kayla. Kayla and I met at Washington City Paper, where she served as arts editor and also somehow found the time to write several beautiful, evocative pieces on the challenges of modern motherhood. Kayla speaks of motherhood with a poetic reverence grounded in a reality that extends far beyond platitudes and the impossible ideals society places on moms. She sees the art in mothering.
Beyond being a professional critic, writer, and editor, she is also my favorite person with whom to watch and dissect movies. Put all of these glittering attributes together, and we are in for a thoughtful shortlist of motherhood-themed films.
Until next week,
Elizabeth
Happy Mother's Day! When I consider the meaning of unconditional love, my first thought is my mother. Her love is eternal. I can call her anytime, tell her anything, and express any emotion in her presence. She has also helped me realize that as I get older, I need to mother myself. I need to have the same love and grace and care for myself that she has for me. I've written stories that centered on birth and maternal health, but I've also watched plenty of movies and television shows about moms that tugged at my heartstrings. Here are a few films that I enjoy, and I hope you will, too:
-Miss Juneteenth (2020)
-Stepmom (1998)
-Baby Boom (1987)Â
