I’ve been thinking about community a lot lately, specifically how to glean more authenticity and connection from digital platforms like this newsletter and my Instagram. There are so many people I see in fleeting moments online with whom I wish I had a deeper relationship. And so, I am starting a series of dinners at my apartment. I’m thinking of this as a collaborative art project, and I’m calling it Supper.
The first Supper is Saturday, November 13th at 7 p.m. I have a table that most comfortably seats four, so I’ll host the first three people who email me to R.S.V.P. You can reply to this email or at elizabethgtuten@gmail.com.
If you respond but aren’t among those first three, I will email you when I have chosen dates for December, January, and February. No matter who you are, how we know each other, or what our history is, you are welcome in my home. If you want to spend time together but none of the Supper dates work for you, we will find another time to spend together over a meal. I promise.
Before you respond, here is what I ask of guests:
Show up. If you’ve confirmed, plan for this like you’ve got a non-refundable ticket to the best show in town.
Show up sober and plan to remain so. This is an exercise in vulnerability for all of us!
Show up with something to share, like a song that’s made an impact on you, a poem you like, a question for the group, a musical instrument you enjoy playing, or dessert.
I live in Kalorama, in Northwest Washington, D.C. I’ll share the address to the attendees and check in about food restrictions in a confirmation email. Supper will be vegetarian. Because we’re still in a pandemic, obviously I ask that you be vaccinated and stay home if you feel sick.
There will be twelve guests total over the course of these four months. In March, 2022, I will gather as many of us together as possible for a potluck and art-making fest. My goal is to turn strangers into friends and build an intentional community, a little flicker of warmth and light in the midst of a dark winter.
I hope to see you soon!
Until next week,
Elizabeth
